In March 2001, the Australian standards organization named Standards
Australia approved a method for the sampling and analysis of ambient
air centered around R&P's TEOM
Series 1400a Ambient Particulate Monitor. This represents the
first time that an automatic monitor has received a standards designation
from Standards Australia for ambient particulate matter measurements.
The title of the new standard is "AS 3580.9.8-2001 Method
for sampling and analysis of ambient air - Determination of suspended
particulate matter - PM(sub)10 continuous direct mass method using
a tapered element oscillating microbalance analyser."
The standard's abstract is as follows: "Sets out a method of
operating the tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) analyzer
to determine suspended particulate matter in ambient air. The method
allows continuous operation, providing near real-time measurements
of mean particle concentration over periods from 10 minutes to 24
hours."
