UMEG Evaluates ChemComb Cartridge

UMEG is a leading German air quality monitoring and research organization with its headquarters in Karlsruhe, Germany. The organization has recently conducted a research project to characterize the performance of the ChemComb Model 3500 Speciation Sampling Cartridge from Rupprecht & Patashnick. The module can be used in a number of different ways, for example as the flexible sampling device used in R&P Partisol Model 2300 Speciation Sampler.

A unique feature of the ChemComb sampling cartridge is a patented glass honeycomb denuder that can effectively separate selected gases from the sample stream while allowing particulate matter to proceed to a multi-stage filter pack located downstream.

The initial stage of UMEG's research work has now been compiled in the form of an intermediate report available in English (2 MB) and German (420 KB). The report is entitled "Examination of the Suitability of the Partisol Speciation as a Sampling System for Gaseous and Particle-Bound Inorganic Air Pollutants," dated May 2001.

The UMEG report describes the results from laboratory analyses involving the inorganic gases sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ammonia (NH3). For each gas, the UMEG measured the collection efficiency of a single and dual-stage honeycomb denuder system at different concentrations and exposure durations. In addition, the appendices of the report provide detailed procedures for the coating, handling and analysis of the honeycomb denuders for SO2, NO2 and NH3 measurements.

The document concludes that ChemComb Cartridges used in combination with R&P's Partisol Model 2300 Speciation Sampler provide sufficient collection efficiency and resolution for determining the concentrations of SO2, NO2 and NH3 for regulatory compliance purposes. This applies to both existing and planned future ambient air regulations.
