The TEOM Series 1500 PMA Reaction Kinetics Analyzer opens up new possibilities in the measurement of mass changes of a fixed bed reactor under realistic operating conditions. The instrument features the company's Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance technology to enable flow-through experiments. The instrument has been used successfully by a number of research groups for a variety of applications centered around heterogeneous catalysis.
To date, the catalyst researchers have used the Series 1500 monitor primarily for catalyst work ranging from coking kinetics and poisoning studies to acid site determination. Refer to the bibliography for details on papers currently in publication. High pressure steam studies and adsorption/desorption studies including TPD/TPO experiments are also possible. In addition, the device has been used for acidity determination, competitive adsorption and general catalyst characterization.
The instrument provides the following capabilities:
- Packed bed microreactor in a microbalance
- Real time data for mass changes
- Temperature range from -80 to 700 degrees C
- Pressure range from 1 to 50 atmospheres
- Windows-based control system
- Real world space velocities
- Moderate temperature capabilities: Studies can be carried out up to 700 deg C.
- High mass sensitivity: The system has a mass resolution of 1 microgram at actual reaction conditions.
- Pressure capability: Using a high pressure option, experiments can be run from vacuum to 60 atmospheres.
- Corrosion resistant: Materials exposed to reaction and product gases are made up of stainless steel and glass. HCl and steam have routinely been used.
- Compact design: The sensor unit measures 36 cm (high) x 33 cm (wide) x 17 cm (deep).
-
Easy sample exchange: Unscrewing one large nut (see photo) and two Cajon fittings exposes the sample chamber.
